UN General Assembly High-Level Meeting on Antimicrobial Resistance 2024
On September 26th 2024, global leaders at the UN General Assembly released a political declaration on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) that pledges to scale-up actions to reduce deaths from AMR. This declaration, signed by all 193 member states, comes in the wake of warnings that AMR could undo a century of medical progress and could claim 10 million lives a year by 2050.
In particular, the declaration acknowledges the impact that pharmaceutical manufacturing can have on the spread of AMR through the generation of effluent with antimicrobials and their metabolites (§74 and §76). Further, it pledges to identify methods for environmental surveillance, and to contribute to preventative and mitigative measures to address key pollution sources, by helping to integrate these environmental aspects into policy-making (including legislation and regulations) and into national action plans on AMR (§78).
Our antibiotic-free plasmid maintenance system can make an important contribution to these efforts by eliminating the need for antibiotics in pharmaceutical manufacturing in E. coli. Let’s safeguard our antibiotics for use in medicine. If you would like more information, or would like to test our technology, please reach out to us.
